Quick Tips: Scholarly Journals and Magazines
short lessons on library usage
Many instructors require you to use articles from "Scholarly Journals"
because their articles contain information based on original research or experimentation
rather than "Magazines" which consist of articles that are
based on opinion and fact finding.
Magazines:
- have articles that
- are written by journalists
- concern topics that are of general interest and use language that is
geared toward a mass audience
- include few, if any, references (bibliographies)
- are selected for publishing by editors
- have many colorful ads
Scholarly Journals:
- focus on a particular field of study
- have articles that
- are written by and for scholars or experts in the field
- include bibliographies
- are selected for publishing by peers
- have few, if any, colorful ads
